General Roof Information

Roof Insulation In Pitched Roofs

The majority of existing domestic properties, new build homes and period properties that are now offices or apartments have pitched roofing. If you are looking for roof insulation or roof renovation for your pitched roof then you have definitely come to the right place. PermaSeal have been handling roof insulation in pitched roofing for over two decades and are ideally placed to help you with your roof insulation requirements.

Roof Insulation in Pitched Roofs

Pitched roofs are usually built around a timber roof frame. Depending on the age of the building, this roof frame could be in great condition, or it could need some treatment. When you buy a building, whether as a home or for your business, you should ensure that your surveyor goes into the attic and checks the condition of the roofing beams, as well as doing a visual check on the tiling, eaves and ridges from the outside.

Pitched roofs can be covered in a variety of materials, the most common being clay or slate tiles. Tiling can come in a variety of colours and patterns and you can also buy reclaimed tiles and slates, which can be particularly useful if you live in a period or listed property and need repairs that are in keeping with the existing look of your home. There are also several designs of ridge tiles available, which you can use to add a decorative look to your roof.

Your pitched roof will require some maintenance, and you should always check for loose, damaged or missing tiles in the run-up to winter. Discovering and repairing seemingly small items like these could prevent rain and snow-melt leaking into your house through your roof. This can also be helped through roof insulation which will plug up any gaps and crevices, helping prevent vermin and birds and reducing the cost of your heating bill.

The roof insulation provided by PermaSeal is principally used as a stabilisation medium on pitched roofs. It forms a seamless, barrier, stopping wind and dust whilst extending the life of your existing roof far beyond any conventional re-roofing methods. Roof Insulation And Roof Care

Roof Insulation and Roof Care - Although your roof will benefit considerably from roof insulation, it is also important that you ensure that your roof is correctly maintained after having the roof insulation installed.

Your roof is one of the most important parts of your building, and it can also be one of the most vulnerable. Continually exposed to the elements, and the hardest part to reach and maintain, it is important that you keep it well maintained. Roof insulation using the PermaSeal Rigid Polyurethane Insulation Spray System will limit the amount of maintenance needing to be undertaken on your roof but will not totally eliminate the need for maintenance altogether.

Whatever the construction of your roof and the roof insulation installed, you need to pay attention to its condition. Ideally, you should have your roof checked at least once a year - late summer or early autumn are good times for this, so that you have time to rectify any problems before winter. Ensure that the roof is free of debris, such as leaf-waste, twigs and branches.

You are advised against undertaking this inspection yourself, unless you have the right safety equipment and knowledge of roof safety. Roofs are dangerous places and you can do more harm than good by walking on the tiles. If you can, hire a professional to inspect your roof for you. They will also be able to spot broken, cracked or loose tiling and repair or replace where necessary. Your inspector will pay special attention to the areas where roofs are most vulnerable; around dormer windows, chimney breasts, ridges and air vents. If your roof is leaking, these are the highest suspects on the list, and the places where you are most likely to need repairs.

Inspecting the roof from the inside is also advisable and you will be surprised at how much you can ascertain from the attic. By going into your attic or roof space and checking out the roof from the inside you will be able to identify problems such as, a bowing of the roof, rotting of the joists or areas where water is coming in. This will help identification of the problem areas from the outside. However, if you have used the Rigid Polyurethane Insulation Spray System these crevices should already be efficiently insulating your roof and preventing it from leaking.

Air Infiltration

Are you one of the many UK homeowners who finds that they are spending too much on their monthly heating bills? Although the price of gas in the UK has risen sharply over the last twelve months, contributing to the significant increase in your heating bills, it may not be the only reason why you are paying so much. Heat lost through badly insulated roofs is thought to account for an average 12% increase on your heating bills. Read on to discover how efficient roof insulation can help.

Many people don't realise that if their attic, walls and floors are under-insulated air-infiltration will become a significant - and costly - problem. Studies suggest that bad roof insulation can result in the loss of between 50% and 70% of heat from your home, which has a significant impact on your heating bills. So, what is air-infiltration?

Roof Insulation- Air Infiltration

Air infiltration is caused by cracks and crevices around joints hidden inside the building structure and around the windows and doors. The air travels through the structure inside the walls and along pathways for plumbing and electrical systems and exits through any gap or crevice it comes across along the way. Therefore, air infiltration can account for a significant amount of heat loss in a house. Although air-infiltration is more common in old houses, even newly built houses will have a certain amount of air-infiltration caused by seams.

Roof Insulation can prevent air-infiltration by actually blockading the passageways that the air can move along. By installing efficient roof insulation the warm air will be slowed down in its escape during the winter and the warm air from outside will be slowed in its progress from outside in during summer months. This will not only immediately reduce your heating bills but should also go some way to reducing the draughts.

PermaSeal's Polyurethane Insulation Spray System is the most efficient way of providing the most effective roof insulation for any roof. Industrial Roof Insulation and Renovation

Re-roofing of industrial premises can be expensive which is why you need roof insulation of the highest quality. Below we further examine why roof insulation and renovation, may be more beneficial than re-roofing.

Re-roofing

In many circumstances, re-roofing may seem like the only option. This may be because the damage to the tiles, membrane, insulation and joists is so bad that they require complete replacement. This is a large and expensive job and although the new roof should last for many decades to come once it is completed, renovation may be a better way forward for your roof requirements.

Industrial Roof Renovation

There may be cases where it is best to renovate part of a damaged roof, rather than replace the whole structure. Roof renovation can help solve the fundamental problem you have with your roof and PermaSeal's roof insulation will ensure that you are unlikely to experience such problems again.

The Permaseal foam and coating system can be applied to all roof materials including aluminium, metal and felt. It is in fact especially beneficial in the coating of asbestos roofs. This system can be applied to external roofs and installed in any industrial environment. It involves spraying the foam to the outer surface of the roof and subsequently covering it with a seamless waterproof rubberised membrane.

Permaseal is also able to apply spray foam to the underside of industrial and commercial roofing. When installed it will greatly improve energy efficiency combined with greater structural stability and it also prevents condensation. This PermaSeal Roof Renovation System is one of the highest quality re-roofing products providing you with great value for money.

Over the last two decades PermaSeal has been involved in roof insulation and roof renovation projects of all sizes and roofs of all types. Our surveyor can call at your domestic, industrial or commercial premises and help to advise you on whether your interests are best served by re-roofing and how PermaSeal can best serve your roof insulation needs. With our considerable and extensive experience of roof insulation, we are well placed to help. Why not get in contact with us at enquiries@permaseal.co.uk

Roof Insulation - Part L

If you are looking at roof insulation then you may have come across Part L. Below we have a look at how Part L affects roof insulation.

Over the last few years the correlation between home features such as lack of roof insulation and greenhouse gas emissions has been brought to the public's attention by the government. One of the effects of this was the introduction of Part L of the Building Regulations in April 2002. Part L was introduced in accordance with the Government's concern over the conservation of fuel and power but how does this affect roof insulation and the average homeowner?

Heating, lighting and power in people's homes are responsible for around 27% of carbon dioxide emissions - compared to the 25% caused by fuel emissions from road transport. This is of growing interest to the government as they draw closer to the 2010 climate change deadline for the reduction of CO2 emissions. The introduction of Part L in 2002 aimed to set the standards for energy efficiency in dwellings and naturally this regulation has had a direct impact on the roof insulation industry as companies now have to supply thermally efficient products, which comply with the legislation. DEFRA estimates that these new measures to make buildings more energy efficient will save one million tonnes of carbon per year by 2010, equivalent to emissions from more than one million semi-detached homes.

So, what does all this mean for the homeowner? This means new homes will need to be better insulated and make use of more efficient heating systems. Furthermore, all replacement roof windows and any new roof windows must comply with the legislation and therefore must be thermally efficient. By installing approved efficiency saving roof insulation your home will be far more heat efficient which should lead to a reduction in your heating bills. Furthermore, you will require certification to proof that the replacement roof windows comply with Part L. This is especially important when you come to sell your house as buyer's solicitor will seek evidence of this.
